As many as 37% of the adult and 60% of the teenagers in the UK have a serious addiction to smartphones. Over 59% of them have switched on to using smartphones since last year. The radical growth in the use of smartphones also has a number of social implications, also discussed in the research findings.
Due to the engaging nature of these devices the users spend more time on their phones making calls, texting, browsing and playing games etc. In short there’s a whole raft of new activities available on smartphones which were not available previously. As a result people are now using their smartphones to wake themselves up, during meals, in the toilet, while they are driving or travelling, so basically they are using their smartphones every possible place they could.
We are addicted to such dangerous levels that even 27% of teenagers and 18% of adults are likely to use their smartphones even in prohibited areas like a library, hospital or cinema.
The report also reveals some staggering numbers about the smartphone industry such as; In the year 2010 8% more people preferred taking out phones on contract. The growth in the number of contracts and SIM-only tariffs are also contributing to the use for being more affordable than ever before.
