Had mine since 09..not too bad for the price. One key came loose..sometimes misses a letter….but otherwise ok.

Hi Guys
I’d like some help in locating a new sound card, I spilt some water on it (my fault, obviously) and now the laptop says that I have no audio output device, I tried all the device driver stuff (updates, system restore, uninstalling, installing, reboots etc) but it really doesn’t know that there is a sound card there at all.
Is replacing the sound card an easy thing to do or is there an external usb option

Your thoughts would be most appreciated

PS, Avent Roma 2000, a fine budget laptop, if I wanted so much more then I would have bought a more expensive one, but as it stands it’s been with me for nearly two years, 4 countries, thousands of miles strapped to a motorcycle, hot, cold, damp or dry the thing just keeps on going, it’s not perfect but then I didn’t pay for perfection, I wanted budget and budget is what I got.

We are sorry to hear about so many issues with your laptop. Certainly there are some hardware issues along with some software issues. Can I ask how long ago did you buy this laptop as it has been around for quite a while now, I think over 30 months now. Have you been using it a lot? The reason I ask is because on average laptops tend to last perfectly fine for an average of 3.5-4 years before they start throwing problems. However, I would like to try and answer some of your questions.

1. Overcharging a battery or in other words keeping your laptop plugged in all the time does damage the battery. Also if you have not been letting your laptop’s battery drain completely after a full charge (ideally once fully charged, unplug charger), if not then then you have caused some demage to the battery. Best thing to do is to find a replacement battey. Loads of online shops sell replacement batteries, a cheper alternative to buy used to even new ones for cheap is eBay.

2. This is something a software expert can check on your computer, its very hard to tell what could be the issue.

3. Is you webcam driver working fine, otherwise try updating your webcame driver which can resolve the issue.

4. Again check your sound driver and update, should work unless there is physical demage.

5. Try cleaning your keyboard with a pressurised aircan that you can get from any computer store.

i have a advent roma 2000 , and i have many problems with mine .

1.my battery when it is charged full lasts for as long as 30 miniutes .
2.i made an administrator account and put a password on it , and the account dosent come up on my main screen , and i tried downloding skype but it says i need a password for this account ?
3.my webcam wont turn on
4. my sound only works if i have head phones in .
5.when i type my cap lock keeps going on and moving me to a differnt place and im writing rubbish .

CAN SOMEBODY ANSWER AT LEAST 1 OF MY PROBLEMS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have the Advent 2001 model (purchased in September 2010). I also agree with John’s comment about the keys missing letters. I touch type using the home keys about 50 – 60 wpm, and get very frustrated that when you strike the keys it just does not register. Its takes me twice as long to type something!!! Also my computer is now booked in to be taken on Monday 17 Jan 2011 by Techguys, because of booting problems – when you switch it on there is no guarantee it is going to start & stay on, it looks like it is going to fully boot then it switches itself off??? If it does fully boot, it now takes a while to load, before you can start using it. I only purchased in Sept 2010 (4 months ago) so hardly have anything stored on the laptop, so it cannot be slowing down due to memory being full. It also now has a tendency to crash without notice… I have now been told I could be without my laptop for up to 3 weeks . This is not good…… AAAAaaaggg, I want to change my laptop!

Hi Karen,

You should either try to use the webcam software that came with the laptop or install a webcam capture utility. You can find a software on a trusted download site such as http://download.cnet.com , type in ‘webcam capture’ in the search box to find and download any webcam software you like.

I bought a advent roma 2001- I personally have had virtually no probs until recently – had it since Feb this year (2010) firstly it doesn’t always print the keys I press, I touch type!! The other prob is how the hell do you get the webcam to work without having it connected to Msn messenger!! I want to take some photos to have stored on my laptop- anyone know how to do this?

mary, the same happened to mine. i was lucky enough to still be in warranty and after several phone calls to the tech guys it was finally taken in for repair. it was my hard drive that had gone. I could access windows if i pressed f8 before the screen went off and it would work, but slowly. Hope that helps.
