Advent Roma 2000

Written by Lee

Advent Roma 2000 laptop is a mid range machine aimed at people wanting a machine for day-to-day computing with an easy internet solution for their office work and home. Its also a budget laptop choice for those who do not want a small screen netbook also need an alternative to a laptop with Core 2 or Turion processors which are slightly more expensive than Celeron processor equipped laptops. Advent Roma 2000 has a single-core processor, and delivers a reasonable performance to conveniently handle all your basic tasks with a budget price tag. Advent Roma 2000 is introduced with Windows 7 which is in high demand these days.

Processor Performance

Advent Roma 2000 is powered by an Intel Celeron C900 processor which runs at a clock speed of 2.2GHz and delivers reasonable power and performance. The Celeron C900 is a low-cost, energy-efficient processor and combined with a 3GB DDR2 RAM it is capable of executing a wide range of applications effortlessly.

However, on the downside you can not expect this laptop to handle heavier software such as professional graphic tools such as Photoshop, AutoCad or high end 3D games or even fails when you throw a dozen browser windows on your screen simultaneously. The Celeron processor having only 1MB Cache imposes a limit to perform these memory intensive tasks. You are better off considering Dell Inspiron 1545 T4300, Sony Vaio VGN NW20EF/S that come with Intel Core 2 Duo T4300 processors or the Acer Aspire 5542 which comes with AMD Turion II Processor.

Microsoft Windows 7 Operating System

The choice of operating system for Advent Roma 2000 is Windows 7 which offers a number of improved features than XP and Vista such as better speed, security and reliability. Microsoft has done most significant improvements in the areas of desktop interface, networking and online security. When it comes to usability, Windows 7 offers an impressive device management to recognise all your addon devices such as printers, scanners or digital cameras instantly.

Display and Screen

The harmony between 15.6 inch Widescreen TFT LCD display and Intel 4 series integrated graphics delivers an impressive visual and entertainment experience. The golden ratio of 16:9 is perfect for movies and LCD technology reproduces HD resolution and leaves you wheezing when you watch your favourite movies or video clips on the Advent Roma 2000 laptop.

Hard Disk and Webcam

Another decent feature of Advent Roma 2000 is the 320GB hard disk which provides ample amount of storage space for all your movies, pictures, music and other important data files. For making the most of your leisure hours, there is a web cam fixed on the front screen so that you can video chat with your friends and loved ones.

Connectivity Features

Using the HDMI / VGA connectivity, you can connect Advent Roma 2000 to an HDTV or Plasma screen and enjoy the contents of your laptop on a big screen in true life colours. For data transfer or sharing with external devices, you can use any of the 3 USB ports or digital media card reader available on the casing sidelines. However, for connecting to any hotspot for a quick internet access, you can use the built-in Wi-Fi technology.

Battery Life and Mobility

The only area for a little compromise is battery life. A fully charged Advent Roma 2000 can let you work up to 2 hours which is not at all parallel with all the superb specs it offers. This may not be a big compromise for those who appreciate the many value features bundled in this laptop.

On the portability side it does reasonably well as you can carry it along with ease as it weights no more than 2.9kg which is justified for a standard laptop having a 15.6-inch widescreen and 320GB hard drive.

Hi i have bought an advent roma 2000 laptop from currys carlow in ie, and my problem is that the intel webcam in the evening shows only in the dark, i am thinking that this laptop doesn’t has flash, pls can you answer my problem.
    regards Cynthia.

Hi Cynthia: I am assuming you have already tried tweaking the brightness controls for your camera, also some controls can be found on the video chat client you are using; Messenger or SKYPE. Another suggestion is to allow natural light during the day and sit close to a light source while video chatting in the evenings, also make sure you face the light source for better results.

HMM THE ADVENT ROMA 2000….do not buy it!!!
it feels cheap, the keyboard keys dont strike properly and therefore wrds miss out lettrs,as u can see.

Apart from that when you hit caps lock a popup appears to tell you youve hit caps…why why why? who thought this was a good idea?

the only good thing about it..windows 7…and thats micrososfts not advents

  8. Nick   |  Tuesday, 23 February 2010 at 5:43 pm

It shouldn’t happen as the keyboard is much bigger and nicely spaced out compared to the keyboards you normally find in netbooks, however we take your word for it John, thanks for the info.

Anyone else having the same problems?

  9. teresa arcouthee   |  Monday, 01 March 2010 at 2:41 pm

i bought this laptop in the uk for use in greece where i reside. i’m having the same problem as john. i have to check every written piece for the missing letters and the caps lock popup is not only annoying it delays the typing.

  10. Jonathan   |  Wednesday, 03 March 2010 at 6:02 pm

I can vouch for John`s problems. I have the same problem with the keyboard. Sometimes I can type and every letter is recorded on the screen, and then other times when it seems the interface to the keyboard justs ignores some letters. I`m a computer programmer, and I`m tired of having to search through code that I know I typed correctly, but there are letters missing.

  14. Donald   |  Sunday, 21 March 2010 at 1:03 pm

    @dammy

Go into safemode by pressing f8 while the word advent is p on the screen then you turn it on (or restart computer when windows 7 is loading) choose “safemode” and then you are in the administrator account and you can change everything from there. :)

Angela: Try refreshing your webcam driver. Check http://www.getpcmemory.com/ for laptop drivers

  17. D   |  Monday, 12 April 2010 at 4:25 pm

Seems to be alot of hate for the advent.
If you’re missing letters, you’re a fool who can’t type, i touchtype and my fingers skim the keys barely touching them at all and i never miss a letter.

The pop ups can be removed by either disabling the OSD or uninstalling it entirely (my recommendation is to uninstall, it’s useless) just go to the ‘Control Panel’ then ‘Programs and Features’ then uninstall OSD (i think it might have been called OSD LIVE or something)

The review says it cannot handle programs such as photoshop, well it does and it handles the entire creative suite, i have anything up to 6 different creative suite programs open at anytime sometimes i also have 3DStudio Max open as without completely killing the CPU or RAM

oh and John, i break my keys off regularly, it’s a good way to clean underneath, they all clip back on perfectly, i suggest you look for a guide or ask a friend to help you work out the simple clip functions (inb4 the clip broke, it’s called glue) and it may feel cheap to you, but it does what it’s meant to do quite well, and remember, it’s shiny (honestly the amount of comments i get about how shiny it is, is unbelievable)

  18. D   |  Monday, 12 April 2010 at 4:27 pm

oh i just found out it’s called LIVE! OSD and LIVE! control center (publisher OEM)

  19. Sarah   |  Friday, 28 May 2010 at 11:22 am

    D…..

I am a touch typist, so really, it’s not problem with my inability to type, its the keyboard on the latop – if you’ve got one that types properly, lucky you!

  20. kfc   |  Sunday, 13 June 2010 at 3:33 pm

the keyboard miss out letters if you type really fast, happens to me mostly when I try to enter passwords. since they usually get typed much faster than anything else

  21. jennifer humphreys   |  Thursday, 01 July 2010 at 10:08 am

i think my num lock is on because when i type on my keyboard on the right hand side the numbers come up. When i press the num lock button nothing changes. Can anyone help please?

  22. Terry   |  Wednesday, 07 July 2010 at 10:52 pm

My keys are falling out too and they wont clip back in as as for the silly comment about taking them out – ur off ur head, thats why you can can air dusters and thats what they r 4. and b4 u say well they are expensive, I own a stationery company that sells them 400ml can £2.99.

I am lookin to buy a new laptop and throw this one.
    Dont buy one

  23. Andrew   |  Saturday, 10 July 2010 at 10:03 pm

John is right, the keys on the Advent Roma do stick and missing letters are a problem. It isn’t John, it’s the key pads … as a cheap laptop it seems to have some build quality issues that maybe D hasn’t got with his Advent but John and I both have. That doesn’t mean we can’t use keys D. Also, the wrist area below the key pad runs hot and the wi-fi drops out easily. In fact, the connectivity is poor or perhaps it’s better described as annoying. The mouse area is very black and the right/left clicks simply blend in to the fascia. I wouldn’t buy another one, yet it has some design quirks I quite like; for example, if I drop it, it looks like it will smash to pieces and I will be able to claim on my insurance and buy something likely to last!

My daughter has a Advent Roma2001 bought from Currys in Feb 2010 it has just returned from the techguys, (Currys repairs people). They have had it for 25 days to replace the Keyboard and reseat the Webcam. When I took it to Currys they told me that the Keyboard problems were a known issue with this advent model! We had the laptop back and within 10 minutes worked out the webcam had not been sorted and still had the intermitted fault. I rang and arranged to have the laptop sent back again to find on it’s return 7 days later that within 3 hours of using it another key has popped off the keyboard. This machine is only 6 months old, does any one know if I would be entiltled to my money back?
I don’t trust the machine to last any time at all. We have a HP and a Toshiba laptops as well and we have had the HP one for 5 years with no problems what so ever.

I do not believe it should be possible to pop the keys off like this!

  25. Nick   |  Wednesday, 21 July 2010 at 2:29 am

Hi Gill: You should definitely try to get a refund or at least get it fixed under warranty, we have been receiving quite a lot of complains about the keyboard being flimsy.

  26. Julian   |  Wednesday, 28 July 2010 at 1:28 pm

I need help because i need a numpad but i need to buy a USB one but i don’t want to and i can’t seem to find out how to turn num lock on, i need help please

  27. Nick   |  Friday, 30 July 2010 at 6:06 am

Julian: Are you sure its not a hardware issue? If you suspect its your software then try restoring windows to an earlier date and you should be able to get your working settings back. Here’s a guide on Microsoft’s website http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/systemrestore.mspx that explains the process.

  28. Lawrence   |  Wednesday, 25 August 2010 at 4:45 pm

I’ve had an advent Roma 2000 for under a year I have had three problems
first my mouse pad wouldn’t work properly even on full sensitivity had to be sent off and replaced then I had another problem a few months ago it kept booting but then crashing, scanned from another computer no trojans no malware no virus so I  had to send it off again then they sent me a new one due to hardware problems. Had new one now currently now my speakers just don’t want to work they are used but they are never on full volume the sound is normal played through speakers. This laptop gets a rating of 4/5 having to increase ram because it takes forever to load applications. Currently phoning the repair people to come pick it up and redo this laptop for the 3rd time. DO NOT BUY THIS LAPTOP IS MY TIP FOR EVERYONE JUST NON STOP PROBLEMS.
And for people who can’t do a simple thing take a computer course, this will save people solving issues which could be done if you searched.

I went to use the webcam to videochat of messenger and it wont pick up the webcam at all, How do i get it to work? Cheers

  30. Nick   |  Wednesday, 25 August 2010 at 6:20 pm

Hi Alex: Have you checked if you webcam driver is working, check it by going to the device manager in the control pannel, if you need to refresh your webcam driver then go to http://www.getpcmemory.com/ to driver download drivers

I can also vouch for the Advent Roma 1001 having intermittent keyboard issues. My Mum bought one and has found it terribly frustrating, she’s a “silver surfer” and finds it difficult enough as it is to keep up with the pace of things. Add to that paying, what is for her, a lot of money for a laptop which doesn’t function as expected. Well, it’s just disheartening and terribly unfair. We’re going to try and return / exchange it today…wish us luck.

    Hi
i just did recovery for my laptop advent roma and it was working correctly, then it went off. and when i restarted its loading the name and goes again(no display) wht it is?

  33. Nick   |  Monday, 20 September 2010 at 6:54 am

    Hi Mary

Unfortunately we do not provide extensive troubleshooting advice, as you can see, we only suggest the best shopping deals available online, but here are a few pointers that might help.

Have you tried booting up in safemode? does it work? if so then the operating system is either old and clogged up and you need to re-install the operating system. If safemode does not work for you, then perhaps it could be a hardware issue and you need to get it checked from an expert.

    I hope it helps!

  34. nicki   |  Tuesday, 26 October 2010 at 8:31 pm

mary, the same happened to mine. i was lucky enough to still be in warranty and after several phone calls to the tech guys it was finally taken in for repair. it was my hard drive that had gone. I could access windows if i pressed f8 before the screen went off and it would work, but slowly. Hope that helps.

I bought a advent roma 2001- I personally have had virtually no probs until recently – had it since Feb this year (2010) firstly it doesn’t always print the keys I press, I touch type!! The other prob is how the hell do you get the webcam to work without having it connected to Msn messenger!! I want to take some photos to have stored on my laptop- anyone know how to do this?

  36. admin   |  Friday, 31 December 2010 at 2:20 am

    Hi Karen,

You should either try to use the webcam software that came with the laptop or install a webcam capture utility. You can find a software on a trusted download site such as http://download.cnet.com , type in ‘webcam capture’ in the search box to find and download any webcam software you like.

  37. arran   |  Tuesday, 11 January 2011 at 10:01 pm

Hiya, I’ve had my advent laptop for quite a long while now, but for someone reason the webcam has stopped working and i don’t know how to connect it back up. Please help!!(:

  38. Sarah   |  Saturday, 15 January 2011 at 12:30 pm

I have the Advent 2001 model (purchased in September 2010).  I also agree with John’s comment about the keys missing letters.  I touch type using the home keys about 50 – 60 wpm, and get very frustrated that when you strike the keys it just does not register.  Its takes me twice as long to type something!!!  Also my computer is now booked in to be taken on Monday 17 Jan 2011 by Techguys, because of booting problems – when you switch it on there is no guarantee it is going to start & stay on, it looks like it is going to fully boot then it switches itself off???  If it does fully boot, it now takes a while to load, before you can start using it.   I only purchased in Sept 2010 (4 months ago) so hardly have anything stored on the laptop, so it cannot be slowing down due to memory being full.  It also now has a tendency to crash without notice…  I have now been told I could be without my laptop for up to 3 weeks :-( .  This is not good…… AAAAaaaggg, I want to change my laptop!

  41. Mark   |  Friday, 29 July 2011 at 12:44 pm

    Jennifer:

We are sorry to hear about so many issues with your laptop. Certainly there are some hardware issues along with some software issues. Can I ask how long ago did you buy this laptop as it has been around for quite a while now, I think over 30 months now. Have you been using it a lot? The reason I ask is because on average laptops tend to last perfectly fine for an average of 3.5-4 years before they start throwing problems. However, I would like to try and answer some of your questions.

    1. Overcharging a battery or in other words keeping your laptop plugged in all the time does damage the battery. Also if you have not been letting your laptop’s battery drain completely after a full charge (ideally once fully charged, unplug charger), if not then then you have caused some demage to the battery. Best thing to do is to find a replacement battey. Loads of online shops sell replacement batteries, a cheper alternative to buy used to even new ones for cheap is eBay.

    2. This is something a software expert can check on your computer, its very hard to tell what could be the issue.

    3. Is you webcam driver working fine, otherwise try updating your webcame driver which can resolve the issue.

    4. Again check your sound driver and update, should work unless there is physical demage.

    5. Try cleaning your keyboard with a pressurised aircan that you can get from any computer store.

  42. mrkpeake   |  Tuesday, 23 August 2011 at 9:05 pm

    Hi Guys
I’d like some help in locating a new sound card, I spilt some water on it (my fault, obviously) and now the laptop says that I have no audio output device, I tried all the device driver stuff (updates, system restore, uninstalling, installing, reboots etc) but it really doesn’t know that there is a sound card there at all.
Is replacing the sound card an easy thing to do or is there an external usb option

Your thoughts would be most appreciated
    Many thanks in advance, Mrkpeake

PS, Avent Roma 2000, a fine budget laptop, if I wanted so much more then I would have bought a more expensive one, but as it stands it’s been with me for nearly two years, 4 countries, thousands of miles strapped to a motorcycle, hot, cold, damp or dry the thing just keeps on going, it’s not perfect but then I didn’t pay for perfection, I wanted budget and budget is what I got.

  43. george Mc   |  Friday, 02 September 2011 at 2:51 pm

Had mine since 09..not too bad for the price. One key came loose..sometimes misses a letter….but otherwise ok.
