Re: eM350 and trying to use wifi channels 12 and 13 in the UK.

My access point is set to channel 12 (mainly because neighbours are on channels 7 and 8). The netbook can’t see channels 12 and 13. Has anyone managed to access these channels with eM350.

windows 7 starter version does not allow desktop background to be altered
although srceen savers can be set,

if you really want to make your em350 fly then put in 2gb of ram from
mr memory .com costs £20……

Re. the wifi issues with ubuntu I have a solution of sorts, the Broadcom propriety STA driver is what you need (These package contains Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driverfor use with Broadcom’s BCM4311-, BCM4312-, BCM4321-, andBCM4322-based hardware. is0 what the driver description says).
You can install it automatically using System, Administration, Hardware drivers, if you use a third party wifi dongle on the netbook to let you download the driver you need.
Bit of a pain having to use a wifi device to download your wifi driver but it does work, the alternative would be to download the driver onto a flash card on another pc and install it manually.
Now if I can just get the sd card reader working I will be a happy bunny!

I have the emachines 350, use Ubuntu 10.10 (and will upgrade to 11.04 later this week) on 75% of the HD, 25% the original Windows XP. No problems at all. But I almost only use Ubuntu. I starts in 35 seconds until usable, XP takes 1 minute 40 seconds (!).
In Ubuntu everything works except the card reader (which I don´t use anyhow). I also had to set one audio channel down and one up (input) to get the sound working, but that was all. Skype works perfectly, both video and sound, and after installing Ubuntu-restricted-extras all I can imagine watching and listening to on the net just works. Ubuntu and it´s Program central (Swedish, don´t know the english expression) is miles ahead of Windows, and I also think that if you buy a cheap (but good!) computer like this, it is only natural that you want to be able to install the software you need for free. I have owned about 20 computers, but have never been this satisfied. Emachines 350 + Ubuntu 10.10 (and, I am sure, also Ubuntu 11.04) = A perfect match!

You should be able to find ‘device manager’ if you go to
Control Panel>>System>>Hardware>>Device Manager
On this screen you should be able to see a list of the hardware installed on your laptop. If the sound device is missing or shows a yellow exclamation mark then you should try to update the driver files.

Akan: Check if your sound driver is gone missing or corrupted, you can check it in your device manger menu. You did not mention the operating sytem you are using, it would have helped us in pointing you in the right direction. Anyhow try updating your sound driver files using the CDs that came with your laptop or by downloding it from one of the laptop driver sites – a good one to check is http://www.getpcmemory.com/

I bought my emachines late last year in November precisely. It has been working properly and I love it but rescently the sound system stoped giving out sound. When i play a video the video plays but I can’t hear a sound and when I play audio i receive the message “CAN NOT OPEN THE AUDIO DEVICE” I opened the (sound,speech and audio device) in the control panel then I clicked (change speaker setting and adjust system volume) but everything is gray unclickable, I also receive a message NO AUDIO DEVICE. Please how can I fix this sound problem?

Kevin, the missing 22GB is on a hidden partition which has a factory default recovery version of windows on. Press ALT-F10 when booting to access the recovery manager.
