Acer eMachines eM350

Written by Lee

The eMachines eM350 is a great handy netbook by Acer eMachines. We previously thought Acer would re brand the eMachine and Gateway products after acquiring them, but now it seems that Acer is keeping the brands alive. Acer eMachines eM350 is a budget netbook deal that has all the essential computing features and a stunning 10.1″ WSVGA LCD Display.

Ultra Slim Design

With an ultra light weight of 1.1kg, the eM350 Netbook is an ideal travel companion that you can carry around comfortably. In fact the slim and slender size of this netbook is comparable to a lot of the premium light weight netbooks on the market.

Windows XP Home Operating System

Althought Windows 7 seems to be the popular choice these days, but we still think that there is no match to Windows XP when it comes to running on smaller processors. Windows XP is fast ,reliable and less resource intensive to run on netbooks.

10.1″ WSVGA LCD Display

It has an impressive LCD widescreen display which lets you enjoy photos and videos in vibrant colours and brightness, without draining too much battery power.

Intel Atom N450 Processor and Hard Disk

It features an Intel Atom N450 Processor (1.66Ghz, 667MHz, 512KB L2 Cache) which is a great choice of processor for a light netbook, this processor lets you run all your everyday applications without any problems.

Bottom Line

If you require a netbook that fits your budget nicely and gives you all the essential computing features then the Acer eMachines eM350 Netbook is definitely worth considering.

Ali: Sorry to hear about the problem you are having, one solution could be to get an external sound blaster, Maplins does loads of them http://www.maplin.co.uk/searchtemplate.asp?criteria=SOUND%20BLASTER%20%20AUDIGY%20%204%20PRO there are also some software available to do the same but not sure how reliable they are

nice laptop but a bit weak on the design end, I am considering Sony netbook http://www.dealgiant.co.uk/sony-vpcm11m1e-netbook-review-specs-deals/ to be a better deal for me

Mark: Yes definitely Sony VPCM11 M1E is a better deal, or you can also check out some more bestselling netbooks here http://www.dealgiant.co.uk/best-selling-laptops-mini-netbooks-notebooks/

This is a very good Linux machine. I have been using it with Ubuntu (Netbook Edition) for a couple of months now – and I can’t recommend it highly enough. (And in case you’re wondering this is isn’t my first netbook – I’ve had quite a few different machines over the years, and run Linux on other laptops.) My Vodafone 3G dongle also works very well (although you have to top up from a Windows machine at the moment). The 3G network sign-in/connection is incredibly fast – about 3 times faster than under Windows XP or 7. Ubuntu is very easy to install. The only slight quibble – the battery is fairly low capacity on this machine – and it doesn’t run that long on the battery. You’ll need to fiddle with the power management settings in Linux to get the best of what’s there.

Cheers for the great tip Simon, I am sure Linux users would find it useful :)

@Simon: does your card reader working with your ubuntu ? what version do you use ?
My em350′s card reader is not working with UNE 10.04 …

  8. AP   |  Saturday, 11 September 2010 at 12:46 am

So how long does the battery last if you running Windows Xp and doing say some word editing ?
Is the quoted 4 hours a reasonable indication or is it more like 2 hours in real life ?

WRT Reported Sound Problems – I bought an EM350 for my wife, and installed Mandriva 2010.1 on it. I too found the microphone did not work until I realised the volume control is “upside down” – if I dragged the volume control for the left channel to the rightmost position, and the control for the right to the leftmost position, it all worked tikkety-boo. YMMV, but have a go at this before taking it back to the sop, or trying to install a sound card.

    She really loves it, BTW.

For Simon, I have purchased an eM350 and am very impressed. Great bang for buck. Have been trying Ubuntu 9.04 but having all sorts of issues getting it to use wifi and accessing networks. I think it has something to do with the software switch to turn on/off wifi compared to a normal hardware switch. You seem to have had no problems, which version of UNE have you installed? Thanks Dave

Hey, has anyone managed to get bluetooth working under ubuntu on this machine?

  12. Ronald   |  Friday, 17 December 2010 at 8:58 am

I bought my Acer eMachines eM350 Netbook two months ago and below are my experiences:
    1. Hot when I used XP but it lessen when I upgraded it to Windows 7. I still used a cooling fan for safety purposes.
    2. The video graphics is a little bit slower. I sometimes experienced lag when viewing movies.
    3. I sometimes experienced hanging of programs (maybe when I opened several programs… but with 1 or 2, it works smoothly…
    4. This is the cheapest netbook and yet I did not find any major problems with it.
    5. For low budget and minimal use, this is the best…

    Shane (from Australia)
saw a response from simon re vodafone dongle and netbook remix linux
how did you set it up?

I have a virgin dongle and could not figure out the setup when I tried it 6 months ago on my lenovo netbook (perhaps netbook remix have changed since then), but as I remember they wanted some user names and passwords that I was not sure about

Bought my wife an emachine netbook, running win7.  Great machine for the kitchen table.

bought emachines em350 a eek ago as a present for my wife.very disappointing, keeps freezing when on internet more so on facebook applications such as fish world .any ideas any one .pretty much a novice ,so not too much complicated stuff please…

  15. admin   |  Friday, 31 December 2010 at 2:28 am

    Hi Malc,
We have been hearing an awful lot of mixed complaints about this laptop. Considering its budget price and limited features, you would appreciate the fact that this machine is not made for multitasking. In other words to get the best performance out of this machine you should try to quit/exit all other software from your system tray (look for the application icons in the bottom right corner, right click and exit unnecessary utilities), also close browser tabs/windows other than the one you are working on.

Let us know how you get on.

  16. malc   |  Friday, 31 December 2010 at 1:23 pm

hi thanks for your reply.done all that .even closed all virus protection, the lot ..and still freezes .beginning to think there is a problem with it so requested a repair or replacement from where i bought it.

my e-machine has poor video and audio quality. When I’m playing my movie using vlc player or even windows media player the audio seems to catching up to the video. its like buffering if you may. I also install graphics accelerator but the problem is still there.

160GB Hard Disk? Is it just me or did everyone else only get a 138GB HDD with free space 122 GB. I sort of feel a little 22GB ripped off

  23. admin   |  Monday, 28 March 2011 at 3:55 am

Hi Kevin, often at times its to with how your operating system calculates the space.
see the description of this issue here on Microsoft Answers

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-performance/need-clarification-on-hard-disk-space-distribution/e8ba3a5b-a184-4208-8cb8-dfeb00d70a9a

Rest assured its simply impossible for a known manufacturing brand to get away with such a serious flaw in their hardware.

  24. Rob   |  Sunday, 03 April 2011 at 12:48 pm

Kevin, the missing 22GB is on a hidden partition which has a factory default recovery version of windows on. Press ALT-F10 when booting to access the recovery manager.

Compared to my Ipad 2 and Alienware desktop, this net book is the single greatest contribution I made towards my lifestyle, its features are brilliant, its design is incredible, and its performance unmatched.

    Thank you Asus.

I bought my emachines late last year in November precisely. It has been working properly and I love it but rescently the sound system stoped giving out sound. When i play a video the video plays but I can’t hear a sound and when I play audio i receive the message “CAN NOT OPEN THE AUDIO DEVICE” I opened the (sound, speech and audio device) in the control panel then I clicked (change speaker setting and adjust system volume) but everything is gray unclickable, I also receive a message NO AUDIO DEVICE. Please how can I fix this sound problem?

  27. admin   |  Tuesday, 19 April 2011 at 1:31 am

Akan: Check if your sound driver is gone missing or corrupted, you can check it in your device manger menu. You did not mention the operating sytem you are using, it would have helped us in pointing you in the right direction. Anyhow try updating your sound driver files using the CDs that came with your laptop or by downloding it from one of the laptop driver sites – a good one to check is http://www.getpcmemory.com/

  28. admin   |  Wednesday, 20 April 2011 at 10:33 am

You should be able to find ‘device manager’ if you go to
    Control Panel>>System>>Hardware>>Device Manager
On this screen you should be able to see a list of the hardware installed on your laptop. If the sound device is missing or shows a yellow exclamation mark then you should try to update the driver files.

I have the emachines 350, use Ubuntu 10.10 (and will upgrade to 11.04 later this week) on 75% of the HD, 25% the original Windows XP. No problems at all. But I almost only use Ubuntu. I starts in 35 seconds until usable, XP takes 1 minute 40 seconds (!).
In Ubuntu everything works except the card reader (which I don´t use anyhow). I also had to set one audio channel down and one up (input) to get the sound working, but that was all. Skype works perfectly, both video and sound, and after installing Ubuntu-restricted-extras all I can imagine watching and listening to on the net just works. Ubuntu and it´s Program central (Swedish, don´t know the english expression) is miles ahead of Windows, and I also think that if you buy a cheap (but good!) computer like this, it is only natural that you want to be able to install the software you need for free. I have owned about 20 computers, but have never been this satisfied. Emachines 350 + Ubuntu 10.10 (and, I am sure, also Ubuntu 11.04) = A perfect match!

Re. the wifi issues with ubuntu I have a solution of sorts, the Broadcom propriety STA driver is what you need (These package contains Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driverfor use with Broadcom’s BCM4311-, BCM4312-, BCM4321-, andBCM4322-based hardware. is0 what the driver description says).
You can install it automatically using System, Administration, Hardware drivers, if you use a third party wifi dongle on the netbook to let you download the driver you need.
Bit of a pain having to use a wifi device to download your wifi driver but it does work, the alternative would be to download the driver onto a flash card on another pc and install it manually.
Now if I can just get the sd card reader working I will be a happy bunny!

Re: eM350 and trying to use wifi channels 12 and 13 in the UK.

My access point is set to channel 12 (mainly because neighbours are on channels 7 and 8). The netbook can’t see channels 12 and 13. Has anyone managed to access these channels with eM350.
