    Has anybody purchased this laptop?
Any reviews would be appreciated as am thinking about getting one very soon.

I had heard that Acer models sometimes malfunction soon after the warranty period. Is this the case and should I stay away?

    Many Thanks!

    Nic

Yes this is a great laptop Nick. Nothing like the old Acer laptops that looked cheap and since some of my mates recommended who are using Acer laptops that Acer has improved its technology and now the newer models are far more reliable and stylish.

Hi Nick, my Macbook pro packed in a few weeks back and i was in need of a new laptop. Not having a spare 1400 kicking about i was looking for a laptop for under £600 that would meet my demands. Having been very Mac oriented throughout my whole life i was reluctant to the take the plunge back to windows. Speaking with a few mates from online gaming clan and AVF Forums. I narrowed my choice down to the Acer 5740i3 – 4gb RAM, 320gb harddrive etc £550 total price I got it for. I use it for Video editing via my hauppage PVRHD, webrowsing, msn, email, office, gaming – tried MW2 on it and runs spot on, i borrowed a friends copy to test it out. Very impressed…. mainly use PS3 for that. All in all, runs smooth, feels very sturdy, nice finish, Windows 7 works like a dream so much more user friendly. I have almost been converted. Serioulsy money well spent and get alot of machine for the price.

I bought this laptop a week ago, and I am very happy to say that I made the right decision. The screen is very impressive for watching movies and playing games, also the HD out is a handy feature that I use for connecting my HD TV and love chatting to my family using my 42″ TV, you’ll probably think I am mad but its a lot of fun :)

However I have deleted the sound driver, the sound still works but not quite the same result, how do it get it back, i cant find it on the setup disks, perhaps I am not very tech savvy, please help.

I got the Aspire 5740 250GB hard drive, 2GB RAM, with the i3 330M processor. Also comes with the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD. Was looking for an affordable but quite powerful mid-range laptop and this certainly meets the mark. Bought for £440 and as far as I’m concernded you get a real bang for your money. I have since upgraded the RAM to 4GB to give it a little extra poke and be more gamer friendly, and to make use of its dual channel memory, which was redundant until I put the new memory stick in, as the laptop only came with one stick of 2GB RAM rather than two 1GB sticks, which seems silly to me, as the dual channel memory was quite a key selling point for the 5740. Other than that its very sleak and stylish, love the elegant and modern blue cover and the little blue light surrounding the main power button, nice little touch. The see-saw mouse button bar is a tab rubbish but I’m really just splitting hairs with that one. A highly recommended mid-range laptop that punches well above its weight.

Have had the acer 5740 with core i3 330m, 3gb ram, 320gb hard drive now for over 6 months.. This is used for many tasks including video and audio playback, and I often run multiple programmes in the background at the same time. This laptop copes very well, and although the processor can run rather warm, never has any problem or hesitations. Other friends who have seen ths in operation have since gone for this or similar spec Acer laptops and are alll very pleased that they have done so

    Nick,

My laptop just catastrofacly (can not spell) failed, HDD went and warranty just about to expire in about 3 weeks. luckily sent it back in time and received it yesterday and it works a lot better. so be careful because the HDD could be a week point otherwise a very good laptop.

    Got the updated model though,

    Intel Core i5 430m
    320GB HDD
    3GB RAM
    Other wise exactly the same
